only two months this time

July 18, 2017

I got the promotion.

Three weeks ago I joined a gym.

Today I turn 45.

Here’s a quilt I recently finished :

running! turns out it’s fun!

October 5, 2014

Finished the Pittsburgh Great Race 5K last Sunday with my friend.
Time: 55:12
Overall, #3,931 of 4,240
Females: #2,414 of 2,651
Females, aged 40-44: #257 of 272

Decided to do another 5K today (just a small local charity one, the Bryon Martini Jr Memorial 5K), by myself, to get a better idea of what I could do and where I’m starting from.
Time: 47:30
Overall, #72 of 149
Females: #37 of 95
Females, aged 40-44: #5 of 9
(32 women of 95 didn’t list their age… so it makes the age division difficult to judge)

I had soooo much fun both weeks! I want to do more and get better! I’ve gotten back on track with lots of walking but I need to add some running into the mix if I want to see that time improve!

my 1st real 5k

September 27, 2014

Sooooooo… it’s been forever since I posted.  Which means I likely have zero readers at this point.

Will that stop me from random posting? Uh, no.

Tomorrow I am doing the Pittsburgh Great Race.  It will be my third 5k but my first that is timed.  I will be walking more that running as the friend I’m doing it with has had various injuries every week since June and we haven’t been running so I don’t expect the time will be anything spectacular.

I ran! Outside! Really!

April 13, 2014

And the most amazing part?  It wasn’t as hard as I thought it was going to be.

I haven’t done the C25K in forever… I’ve just been walking. Even when I did do any running, it was on the treadmill.  So needless to say, I thought I would be dying after running 90 seconds.

My friend and I met up yesterday and we decided to try Week 3, Day 3 on her app.  We found out after we finished that we had actually accidentally done Week 4, Day 1.  So I ran a total of 16 minutes and I felt like I could have easily done more.  I guess that is my starting point! Yay!

It was easier than the treadmill which I completely do not understand!!!

I felt like freaking Rocky when it was over!

We have to find a different meetup place for next week since there’s going to be a 5k and half-marathon on that part of the Great Allegheny Passage.

I woke up today to sore thighs, not pain, just sore so it’s all good.

I’ve been neglectful…

I am still here, still exercising, still counting what I eat, still really wishing winter would be freaking OVER!!!

What did I do this week?  Made over 100 chocolate covered oreos, over 200 chocolate covered strawberries, and am averaging 600 – 1000 calories a day in pure junk in addition to meals…  Not that those things are connected, right?  The students where I work are fundraising for their annual school trip and for valentine’s sold chocolate covered strawberries, pretzels, and oreos…  I am the leader of the fundraising committee… lucky me.  I have multiple pounds of chocolate in my office and I can’t say I’ve been great with willpower this week.

But I am committing myself anew to stop justifying the junk.  I’m going to make a big pot of vegetable soup for the weekend and get back on track so that last week’s gain of .4 pounds doesn’t grow up and find friends.

Since I am averaging over 10,000 steps a day I feel good about my accomplishing of the “getting off my ass part,” now to work on the “STOP EATING GARBAGE” part!!!

high tech dieting

January 12, 2014

Losing weight in 2014 is so much more fun then 2004 or 1994! Back in 1994 I would devote a notebook to calorie and weight tracking and in 2004 I had spreadsheets.  But, now? I have websites that link to each other, feeding information into a variety of charts and graphs, and in some cases giving me the opportunity to earn discounts, rewards, donations to charity, and even actual cash. Talk about motivating!

The weight I use on my weight journey page here is the same as I log at MyFitnessPal. That weight feeds out to Fitbit, SparkPeople, and others. That weight is Mondays, in the morning, naked. DietBet has its own weight logging and is usually a little different because that weight is when I am dressed for the photos required there (described as airport security attire) and so far hasn’t been a Monday.

My exercise page is the portion of my daily exercise that I do purposefully on the treadmill and record here. But that’s just a portion of all the Fitbit data throughout my day that then feeds into MyFitnessPal for calories and Earndit, Everymove, AchieveMint, Walgreens, and others to earn me discounts, cash, donations to charity, entries to contests, etc.

Truly amazing… In another ten years, when I am maintaining this loss, I wonder what the trackers are going to look like and do…

continuing the cliché – Welcome to 2014

January 1, 2014

I hate to say I am making resolutions… resolutions don’t have a good track record for me, or apparently for most of the rest of the world.

But I definitely have goals in mind for this year.

First, my weight. Well, as you know, I’m leading the biggest loser challenge for my location at work. So, of course, I’d like to win that!  1st place is $300, 3rd place is $100, that is what I got last year. I’m proud that I am starting this year at the weight I ended last year’s challenge because that means I didn’t just gain everything I lost back! However, starting at a lower weight also makes winning harder.

For me, money is an incredible motivator, so I also signed up for two 4 week Dietbets and the 6 month challenge as well. Which puts a goal of 4% on me for January 30th to win the 4 week challenges and month one of the 6 month challenge. At that point I will reassess if I want to join more. I feel real confident about the 6 month challenge, it will end two weeks before my birthday and I am pretty sure I can lose at least 10% by then!

Exercise goals. I am planning to restart the 5k training program. The first 5k I found that I absolutely want to do is in April (originally I thought it was in March.) I may look for another to do in March as well. I also want to add in strength training but I don’t have concrete goals related to that yet. I have been working towards being able to do a pull-up and a chin-up. My goal will be to be able to do a pull-up and a chin-up by my birthday in July. And in general, a little bit of exercise everyday, so continue to work to get at least 10k steps per day (seriously addicted to my Fitbit!)

Sewing. I don’t really have definable goals but I would like to use up the majority of fabric in my stash.

My hair. My goal is to let it grow! I do what is called “search and destroy” where I look through my hair and snip any split ends that are found. That will be sufficient for quite a while.

And that will do for now.

jump on the bandwagon: 2013, a look back

December 31, 2013

Like you haven’t heard all this before…

2013, the year I lost 38 pounds, quit smoking, and found out I liked running…

What else did I do this year?  Well, I learned more about sewing with knits, making swing jackets for a coworker, dresses for myself, and most recently the fancy pants…

I also sewed some coffee cozies and mug rugs.  Oh, and finished the quilt I started years ago:

And now, it is time to look forward to what will be…

Welcome 2014.

what to add for 2014?

December 30, 2013

It is time to make a new change, to add something in to my health and fitness life.

See, back at the beginning of 2013 I began counting calories.  In August I added in exercise (cardio) and quit smoking but quit counting calories.  Then, at the end of November I added back in counting calories.

Now, I think it is time to add in some strength training!  Way back in the day, 1994-ish, I lifted.  I didn’t do cardio if I could avoid it but weights?  Loved it!  Time to re-embrace that feeling of power.  Back then I belonged to a great gym, even worked there for a while.  Currently a gym won’t be an option so I am starting to research bodyweight exercises.

Not giving up my cardio though, turns out I enjoy it.

Biggest loser update:  our team for the big challenge is at 6 people and our local competition group is 10 people.  People have until Friday to join and then weigh-in is by the end of the day on Monday.   I’m excited and plan on kicking ass again this year.  I maintained everything I lost in last year’s competition so I have happy hopes for this year’s!!!

sewing for exercise

December 28, 2013

Oh, if only sewing really counted as exercise… I would easily be svelte!

So this morning I achieved my plan of making new exercise gear.  Two new pairs of fancy pants:

Sadly, I didn’t have enough of the dots fabric to make a matching top.  I did have enough of the red/blue fabric on the right to do so.   And hair wraps as well from both though I only photographed the one.

I wore the red/blue pants to walk this evening and had to change out of them after a mile and a half…  They are warm!  So, I can see them working well for those early cold mornings when the back room where the treadmill resides is chilly but today wasn’t a very cold day so they were a bit much.

In between my sewing this morning and walking this evening we went and ate at the Chinese buffet then came home and napped.  All in all, a relaxing Saturday!  (With a bit of sadness in the day as well as I watched my motorcycle go off to its new home. We sold it yesterday and they came to get it today.  Maybe someday I will get another…)
